Water is an important element in life and it flows not the way it did 10 years ago. All farmers suffer of this problem for their animals (sheep's, goat's, cow's etc.) and harvest because they lost everything in order to service their equipment.

Because of lack of electricity, farmers were starting to use the old watermills again, which were build about 2000 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. So far farmers repaired 4 of the mills in this area and will continue to bring all other watermills in Iraq back to operation.

These watermills consist of 24 spokes, which have two symbolic meanings:

  • Religion aspect: One of the 5 pillars of the Islam is that each Muslim has to believe the following sentence: "I witness that there is no God but Allah and I witness that Mohammed (may Allah's peace and blessings rest on him) his servant and messenger". This sentence consists of 24 letters in the Arabic language.
  • The life aspect: Each day consists of 24 hours, so for every farmer 3 hours a day and this means 3 spokes and so on.

In early days buckets were used to get the water out the river but due to the war people are lack of everything necessary for a daily life and therefore farmers use empty cylinders of old missiles.

This report comes from the city of Hadithah.
