al-Na‘urah
al-Muhammadiyah
is one of a number of famous Na‘urahs (pl. Nawa‘ir) that have been present
in northern Syria for centuries. Mention of them first appeared in Vitruvius’,
De Architectura, Book 10, Ch. 5.;1
however, more frequent mention of them occur within Islamic texts, due to
their extensive use within the Islamicate world. The al-Muhammadiyah dates
back to the 14th century. Na‘urahs were present from Islamic Spain (al-Andalus) to Iran and were used to irrigate lands or supply drinking water via aqueducts to towns and cities. The Na‘urahs of Hamah, Syria, of which the al-Muhammadiyah is one, are very famous till today in the region. They are popular among tourists, as well as to the many old and new emigrants who return home. |

This image
appeared in the first issue of al-Funun and undeniably represents
Nasib’s attempt to appeal to his readers’ sense of nostalgia for their
homeland. It provides an interesting vignette of the Arab-American community
of Nasib’s time, since its inclusion implies that there was a significant
number of Syrians from northern Syria resident in the United States who
would appreciate this image’s inclusion in the journal.

sakieh - Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48 :
Sakieh \Sak"i*eh\, Sakiyeh \Sak"i*yeh\, n.] [Ar. s[=a]q[imac]ah
canal, trench.]
A kind of water wheel used in Egypt for raising water, from
wells or pits, in buckets attached to its periphery or to an
endless rope.
[Webster 1913 Suppl.]
Old Water Wheels
Among the mechanical methods to draw water from the (Nile) river, Egyptians used
from of old a system called the sakieh which consisted of great, squeaky
cogg wheels turned by a buffalo in his worn, circular path underneath a shed
whose water wheel had cups around its circumference to pour water into a trough
or pipe.
Another method was the very common shadoof consisting of a long pivoting
pole with a counter weight at its handling end and a chain on its tip attached
to a bucket.
A photo of large water wheels from the Euphrates area at `Hit' can be seen in
Splendors of the Past, p. 57.
Sakiyeh, A kind of water wheel used in Egypt for raising water, from wells or
pits, in buckets attached to its periphery or to an endless rope.
6.2 Sakieh

Giling
Grind. Most Malaysian cooking start with grinding basic ingredients, or spices. This is done by hand using a stone Mortar & Pestle [Batu Lesung] or a Grindstone [Batu Giling].
Electric food processors and blenders have now eliminated this painstaking chore. However, many Malaysian kitchen still use a stone mortar & pestle for small tasks, such as grinding onions, garlic or some fresh chilies.
Batu Giling : Grindstone
From Latin radix (root), in Chinese script, a radical is a root character, i.e., one of 214 basic characters from which all other Chinese characters are derived.
For example, to find a Chinese character in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary (and probably other Chinese dictionaries), you first need to identify its radical, then find the character in the radical index, which will give you the character number (these numbers are specific to the dictionary. Then you can find the character inside the dictionary and read both its pronunciation and definition.
This is sometimes very easy, at other times very frustrating, especially when the character seems to be derived from more than one radical or when the shape of the radical is changed within the character (this is often the case because each character is drawn in the same size as any other character, hence the radical is often drawn "compressed").
