Most searches use parameters which are displayed with the results like:

In this case the results must contain meul or mill and are limited to South African websites only (.za).
You can modify this text the same way as during normal searching.

United Kingdom (.uk) indicates that only websites who end at --.--.uk will be searched.
USA (.us.com.edu.gov.org.net) will search all websites ending at --.us --.com --.edu --.gov --.org --.net.

As far as I know, the words used for water- and windmill are the same in the Chinese and Japanese languages.
I used 水车 or 水車 and 风车 or 風車 for both searches and distinguish between them by using site:.cn and site:.jp.

Do you see: □□, ____ or ØÀÒáÀÍÀ in stead of , or ?

To correct this problem you need to install extra UNICODE fonts in your computer.
In Windows: Start, Control Panel, Language, Add other Languages, Advanced, here you can add more languages. Windows does not yet support all languages in the world, for these unsupported languages you need to download special fonts: (for instance: Informatiekunde, VBA, Unicodes, Translation, HTML, Internet, Windows, Browsers, MS Office, Fonts, Talen, Vertalen) See also Chinese computing.
Internet Explorer gives the best results if you select: View, Encoding, þAuto-Select (on).

t r e a d m i l l search is with COUNTRY as a variable and is build up as follows:
COUNTRY Shaduf OR Shadoof OR Saqiya OR Noria OR "water lifting" OR "water wheel" OR treadle OR "chain pump" OR archimedean OR treadwheel.

Google limits each search to a maximum of 1000 results but often it finds much more. Which results are showed, Google uses a "secret" algorithm.

Fore instance Google gives Websites more chance to be included in the first 1000 results the more links Google finds to that Website in other Websites.

Probably the mill you are interested in is Google's result 194.382 which is not displayed within the first 1000 results.

Some ideas how to get the most important results for you out of the millions Google finds......

Use more then one word in your search specification (example: Tunisia oil mill history)
Use the same words in other languages (example: for Switzerland, use: French, Italian and German)
Limit your search by domain with the (site:) parameter, see Table 1 (site:.com - site:.org - site:.net - site:.uk)
Use quotes "animal driven mills" or write oil mill in stead of oilmill (without a space)
"Search within results" (Google option at every search result page bottom)
Switch in the Google menu between Images and Web (for text-based-search)
Use the Dictionary of Molinology and look for key-words in mill literature
Use translation-websites: Complete Texts and Word Translators
Use OR, NOT (written in capitals) or select "Advanced Image Search" to adjust search parameters

EXAMPLE:
Tunesia:
Two languages are used in Tunesia; Arabic and French.
The French word for Tunisia = Tunisie (the use of Tunesia gives less results)
search: tunisie mill
search: tunisie huilerie OR huile
search: tunisie moulin: (A search in Arabic language limited to site:.tn gives no results as far as we know.)

Improving the number of results from Google

Google will not give you more than 1000 results in Images or Web mode. At the end the following text appears:
In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 698 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.
(Sorry, Google does not serve more than 1000 results for any query.)
If you press the link, the search starts again and you will get all results to a maximum of 1000.
A search for "mill" in all domains gives 909.000 Images results (Nov. 2005). Google is showing you only the first 1.000 (most important results)! Spreading your search across different domains (see Table 1) will increase your results for "mill" to 4.000.
An Images search for mill, moulin, ....... 风车 OR 風車, 水车 OR 水車 ......., and noria in different domains gives the following results:

Only the green fields in Table 3 are interesting.
The total Google result numbers at the bottom line represent the maximal number of results
you can obtain from Google by spreading your search across these different domains.
