- A Tale of Two 19th Century Windmills in Western Australia
by Keith Preston
Introduction: The establishment of the Swan River settlement
after June 1829, in what later become the state of Western Australia, encountered similar
problems to those experienced by the East Coast colonies of New South Wales, Norfolk
Island and Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) during the preceding 40 years. During the initial
years practically all the material requirements and much of the food was imported, often
at inflated prices. The rate of population increase prior to the commencement of convict
transportation in 1850, was very slow, the total population at the first census in 1848
amounting to only 4,622, of which 1,722 were children under the age of 14.
The first significant wheat crop was harvested at the end of
1831, being ground in part by small steel hand mills. One of the first settlers to arrive
at the colony from Windchester, England in October 1829, William Kernot Shenton, had
erected a horse powered flour mill at Fremantle by about July 1930. In July 1832 he
converted the horse mill into the first windmill.

- A Traditional Wind Powered Water-Raising Device in Greece
by O. Lekou and I. Papamantellos During the last
year of our studies in the faculty of architecture of the National Technical University of
Athens (NTUA) we conducted research connected with our diploma thesis on the hydrology an
water management problems of Kos from ancient times until the end of the Italian
occupation (1948), under the supervision of Professor P. Touliatos. During that research
we found material remains and reports of a water-raising device that had been in use since
the 14th century on the island of Kos and Rhodos for the irrigation of gardens and
orchards. The findings were so fascinating and unusual that we decided to study in depth
its structure and operation and to try to make a reconstruction. (Addresses of the
authors: Olga Lekou, P.Mela 11, Filothei, 15237 Athens - Greece and Isabella
Papamantellos, Baltetsiou 7, Agia Paraskevi, 15343 Athens - Greece.

- Mills on Norfolk Island
by Fred Atkins Norfolk Island, in the Pacific
(29deg.4' S & 167deg. 57' E) is under Australian administration, with a considerable
degree of self-government. In December 1959, Norfolk Island issued a cover bearing a 37c
stamp showing a windmill. Fred Atkins took this event to make some inquiries to mills on
the island.

- The Montefiori Windmill in Jersusalem II
 |
In International Molinology No.
57, we published a drawing of what was called "the first windmill of
Jerusalem". Mr. C.A. Van Hees, custodian of the Stichting Molen-documentatie
("Foundation Mills Documentation") in Amsterdam responded by kindly sending us
two picture postcards, showing the same mill tower with fake cap and sails. Both cards
were mailed in 1993/94. Unfortunately, the text on both cards does not give much
additional information.
